Ever wonder what does the durian smells like? Well maybe for native Asian folks, the smell of the exotic durian fruit might not seem new as this fruit is indigenous to this place. For those not familiar with the durian smell, the smell really is uniquely stinky. The odour of this fruit is awesomely fetid which is so unlikely in contrast to its inside’s very sweet taste. This exceptional smell of the durian fruit makes it a popular fruit in the world though.
The popularity of its pungent smell is taken both positively as the smell is only outside but the inside of the fruit is heavenly, and also negatively to the point that the mere whiff of the ripened durian fruit can make a person choked. But one thing is for sure, the sweet and unexpurgated flavour of the durian leaves a unique experience to whoever tastes it. Another negative thing about this fruit is that these are banned in some public places as the foulness of the smell of the durian fruit is somewhat (for some unknown reason) beyond compare.
The smell and the fragrance of the durian fruit can make one determine if the fruit is ripened and can be eaten already. Durian fruit is medium sized and ha a brownish and spiky outer cover and has large seeds with yellowish meat.
Another opinion of Travel and food writer, Richard Sterling says :
“ … its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia. ”
The coolest thing about the smell of the durian is the tingling feeling it gives to the eater, as the sensory experience it offers is beyond its aroma and flavour.
