“The durian smell is really stinky!” This is the usual answer of the people when they are asked of what does the smell of the durian like. But there are also who finds the smell as fragrant.
For me, as an Asian person by birth, the smell of the durian fruit does not bother me at all. The smell that the fruit give-off when it ripens seems like a delight for me since this means that I can once again eat the fruit that is very luscious, sweet and oh so yummy. I cannot blame the people who really claim that the aroma of the durian fruit is really unbearable and offensive as there are really some who are really sensitive when it comes to the smell of the foods.
The unique and somewhat different smell that the durian fruit produces leads to its banishment in some places like hotels, airplanes and other public transportations and utility vehicle. The not so good smell it produces especially when it is ripened already induces reactions from profound pleasure and admiration into deep and severe disgust. Also, these unfavourable smell it produces leads to misconception as to consider the durian fruit as not tasty. Which must not be even considered true since the smell of the fruit or what it is outside (as it’s skin is quite hard and spiky) is far much different into the heavenly taste the inside part of the durian fruit provides.
“Durian smell is different…just different!” The strong and penetrating smell it gives and leaves to everyone makes it popular not just in tropical Asian countries where the durian tree usually grows, but all over the world.
